UK Work Pay

Universal Credit vs New Style JSA: which can you claim?

When New Style JSA may apply

New Style Jobseeker’s Allowance is based on your employment and Class 1 National Insurance record, usually over the last two to three years. Savings and a partner’s income do not normally affect it. You generally need to be available for work and actively seeking it. It can be paid for up to 182 days.

When Universal Credit may apply

Universal Credit is means-tested. It looks at your household’s earnings, income and capital and can include support for eligible housing costs and children. A redundancy lump sum can affect that calculation. Use the Universal Credit calculator for a preliminary estimate.

Can you claim both?

Yes, if you meet both sets of rules. New Style JSA counts as income when calculating Universal Credit, so compare the combined position. Someone with substantial savings may still qualify for JSA even if their capital rules out Universal Credit. Check your contribution record and use a full benefits calculator if you may qualify for both.
